Hand Therapy

Hand therapy, as the name suggests, is therapy of the hand; including the wrist and forearm.

Although the wrist and hand are a small region of the body, having healthy and well-functioning hands is important as we use them to complete most of our day-to-day tasks.

At Mitchell Integrated Therapy we have two hand therapists who are well trained in the management of wrist and hand injuries, including those mentioned above, and can help improve wrist and hand function in a number of ways, including:

  • Forming an injury diagnosis
  • Custom splinting and Casting
  • Scar management
  • Wound care
  • Post-operative management
  • Manual therapy
  • Goal focused exercise prescription

Injuries or conditions of the wrist can be complex and as the hand is a crucial part of our everyday lives, it is important that hand therapy is goal specific and that therapy is tailored to the individual rather than the diagnosis.

There are a number of different conditions or injuries involving the wrist and hand, with some of the most common including:

  • Fracture or dislocation
  • Tendon or ligament injuries
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Crush injuries
  • DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis
  • Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Trigger finger
  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow
  • Skier’s thumb
  • Triangular fibrocartilage (TFCC) injuries
  • Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Overuse injuries
